We once focused too much on getting work done quickly instead of explaining the full process. That experience reinforced the value of communication—not just completion.


What are your biggest obstacles and barriers to success?

The noise in a crowded market. Differentiating through trust takes time, but it’s worth it.


What is the proudest moment of your leadership career?

Seeing second-generation clients call us without hesitation. That’s trust carried forward.


If a book was written about you and your life, what would it be about?

Doing things the right way when it would’ve been easier not to.

Morgan:
Welcome back to another episode of Ignite success, where we highlight those who are igniting success and making an impact here in Jacksonville.

I’m Morgan Allen, joined today by Joseph Oldring with River City Roofing. Joseph, thank you for being here.

Joseph:
Thanks for inviting me.

Morgan:
Yes. So tell me a little bit about River City Roofing.

Joseph:
Yeah. So River City Roofing. We’ve been around the Jacksonville area for over 40 years, you know, serving the community. I can’t drive. I can’t drive ten minutes down any direction without seeing a few roofs that we’ve done over the course of the, you know, time we’ve been in business.

We’re located in San Marco. Kind of central to everywhere. So we’re only a 20 minute call from any, any part of town inside of Jacksonville or any of the surrounding counties.

Morgan:
Yeah. That’s awesome. So what sets you guys apart from the rest of the roofing industry?

Joseph:
What sets us apart is the 40 years of experience. I mean, like I said, you can’t teach experience. Experience has to be earned. And we’ve, you know, we’ve done it for so long that, you know, it’s part of us, a system. What we do every day, we wake up in the morning. We’re owners. We’re talking roofs for, you know, thinking of better ways to help the community or roofing wise. And, you know, we live it.

Morgan:
Yeah, I know there’s been a lack of people who are in the trades these days, and we’re struggling with that lack of employment. So how are you guys helping the younger folks get into roofing? Are you guys doing anything to help you?

Joseph:
Yeah. Well, I mean, guys, young bucks. Yeah, it’s a hard job. I mean, no one denies, you know, being on top of a roof in Florida, working, you know, ten hours in a day. It’s hard work.

But, you know, in this economy, I mean, people gotta work. So we bring them in, we try to teach them everything that we can teach them. So they can not just be on a roof for ten years of their life. And, but to actually move into other parts of the industry and, you know, sales, you know, estimating, project managing and stuff like that.

Morgan:
So let’s talk about specific jobs. Whenever you’re on a job, what is it that makes the job efficient and successful? How do you get from point A to point B?

Joseph:
Communication. That is the number one thing. I mean, if you don’t have communication or if you have a break in communication from the time that the project, you know, estimator comes on the scene and, you know, it’s, closes the job to the point that, you know, get schedule permits to the point where the project manager is on the job, to the point where, you know, we’re hauling all the debris off.

If there’s a lack of communication anywhere within that chain of, you know, events, you got problems. So communication is something that we, you know, make sure that happens every day, all day. We’re always talking about what’s going on and what projects happen and what customers, you know, are talking about what their feedback is from the customers and stuff like that.

Morgan:
Yeah. It’s so important to get that feedback and continue to grow and make those changes. What’s your role in the company?

Joseph:
My role is basically project estimating. Also, you know, project management and basically just customer relations, I call it. So, I mean, I’m the one that sets foot on the property. First I introduce myself, that I’m the face that I see first, I’m the one that they call. If there is an issue, they just, you know, that’s pretty much it.

Morgan:
Yeah. Any flat tires you have to deal with flat tires?

Joseph:
Yeah. Flat tires happen. I mean, yeah, it’s a nail business. And when you get nails the tires get flat. But you know we yeah we plug them up and we keep rolling there.

Morgan:
You go. That’s the way to do it. So I want to hear about Joseph. How does Joseph ignite success in his daily life? You know, in, in roofing in life, in roofing life a little bit of both.

Joseph:
Try to have a positive outlook. So I, if I keep myself positive, you know, you know, especially with customers come with a positive, positive attitude. You know, it puts them in a positive attitude. So if I can just keep it positive, you know, or going through everything usually is good.

Morgan:
So that really trickles through the way that everybody’s day goes.

Joseph:
Absolutely.

Morgan:
So that’s fantastic. And then what’s one thing that you’re looking forward to

Joseph:
Looking forward to and looking forward to retirement one day aren’t we all.

Morgan:
Yeah I love that. All right. We’re we’re looking back on, very successful, you know, tenure and and retiring and, and having thousands of customers in the city that you prior customers that can run into, you know, and I do all the time Publix you know, to see somebody that, you know, we’ve done work for and it’s always a good vibe and it’s nice, you know, I mean that’s great.

I love the work that you guys do is phenomenal. You guys do not skip a beat so that it’s awesome. Thank you for coming on the show.
