How long have you been in your industry?44 Years
Why did you choose your industry? My developed passion to give back by helping professionals succeed in their chosen profession, which includes individuals that are career professionals or recent college graduates. I had a strong belief that evolved over my career as an accountant and leader that I had the knowledge, experience. skills and the desire to assist current and future leaders develop their Emotional intelligence and their self-awareness of their unique personality type and how both affect their interpersonal style.
Who are your typical clients? My typical client is a professional manager and/or key executive either from a large or small organization. A typical coaching client may come from all functions of an organization, e.g., accounting, marketing supply chain management, research and development, or general management.
What do you like best about being in this industry?Being self-employed where I can help client companies develop their leadership team by coaching their executives and the ability to mentor recent college graduates pursue their passions in a fulfilling future career.
What are common problems you see?First, the need to continue educating potential clients of the value of executive coaching. Second, like many consulting practices, it's an easy industry to enter, so there are new competitors every month. Third, it's a relationship industry, so it's always a challenge to build and maintain clients. When a primary HR contact leaves the client, the replacement will bring in their known vendors.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Know the reasons why you want to provide an executive with an executive coach. Once you notify the executive the company has decided to provide executive coaching, always have the executive interview at least three company qualified and vetted coaches. Always match coaches experience with the executive's identified developmental needs. Assign coaches that have previous experience in leadership positions. Try not to assume when someone purports to be an executive coach, always request their history of success and require references from previously coached executives.
When is your busy season?I have not noticed a busy season, typically when companies establish an annual budget, they include funds spread over the year for employee development.
What keeps you up at night?Replaying my understanding of the client's coaching needs, and have I reconciled the company needs with those of the executive and has the developmental plan been approved by all decision makers.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Networking, when I am not in front of a coaching client. As I previously mentioned, it's an industry based on long-term relationships. Relationships come and go; therefore, I need to continuously stay in contact with existing relationships and network to make new relationships. My networking usually involves attending a minimum of two chamber events, e.g., BABC and WAC, per month.
How involved are you in the community? On a pro bono basis, I spend quality time mentoring recent college graduates on the major career decision whether to continue their education, start their working career or both.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?I have two, Wounded Warrior Family Support and the Eagles Autism Foundation.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Know the reasons you want to enter the coaching business. Have a career history in management and/or leadership positions, preferability at the highest levels. Have a basket of existing contacts in the Human Resources field. Finally, have financial staying power. It may take 12-18 months to land your first coaching client.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Reading books about history.
